Dear Senator,
I am a new mother. My son was born in August, and has completely transformed my life. While before I spent a great deal of time living in the moment, focusing on the day's events, I now find myself thinking much further down the road. Where will we be in 18 years, when he is of an age to become a real participant in our national debate?
The possibilities are chilling.
I have seen, in the years since I gained the right to vote, personal freedoms stripped from people and fear seize America. I have seen Americans, who once fought with their life's blood against a tyrannical rule, accepting more and more constraints on their rights as Americans. And now, with the nomination of Samuel Alito, we are looking at placing on the court a man who will not renounce unitary executive theory, a man who consistently sides with the powerful against the powerless.
Driven by fear, ignorance, or apathy, Americans will let their government steal everything from them. As a Senator, it is your responsibility to speak for those people, to know the things they do not, to see clearly the risks and to act on them.
It is your responsibility to save America for my son, and for all of our children.
It is your responsibility to filibuster Samuel Alito.
