Aug. 27th, 2004 12:30 pmWhen my husband and I first moved into our apartment in March, we signed up for a number of services -- electricity, phone, cable, and the like. We also signed up for Netflix, which is an online movie rental service. When I first heard about it, I thought it had to be a joke. I mean, seriously -- renting movies online? But it's actually been really cool for us. We pay $20 a month, and get an average of probably 4 or 5 DVDs a week. It sounds obsessive and pathetic, and may in fact be obsessive and pathetic, but I love it.
We almost never use it for actual movies -- once in a blue moon, maybe, but we almost never know what kind of mood we'll be in a week ahead of time. What we watch is TV shows on DVD. We watched all of ST:TNG this way, and Angel, and the first season of 24, and are now working our way through ST:DS9. It's nice, really, to be able to watch a series that way -- just to curl up on the couch and hang out online and watch the episodes in a row. We get 3 DVDs at a time, and if we watch one a day (which we frequently do), that's 3 hours of TV, then we pop the DVD in the mail the next morning. We watch the second DVD. The next day we mail that, and Netflix receives the first one and mails out a fresh one. We watch the third DVD. And the following day we get the next DVD. Turnover is literally quick enough that unless we get obsessive and watch all three in a day right before the weekend, we rarely go more than two days without a DVD of some sort from them to watch.
I like it. Not a huge fan of DS9 so far, I must confess, but we'll see how I feel by the end of season 3.
Watched some DS9 last night, and then 13 going on 30, which I saw on the plane back from London and adored, so bought. Had a few drinks, got in a few good RP sessions -- have a new alt on my Pern game, who is shaping up to be kind of fun... I like playing characters who are essentially foils for others, sometimes. He's not outspoken, he doesn't talk about himself, he just wants to get his job done well so he doesn't get tossed out into the snow. He's fun. He's kind of like Sarette on Firan, except older and male and non-religious. ;)
Work still unfun. I need to buy veggies and cards tonight -- my mom's hosting the monthly "Recent and Upcoming Birthdays" party at her house tomorrow, and I agreed to bring a veggie platter, plus I need birthday cards. I also need pretty $20 bills to put inside of them, though I'm considering making jewelry for my aunt, instead. I'll have to check out what stones I have and their meanings; she's much more into that than I am.
However, I need to get back to work now. Will write again soon, I hope.
